Nancy’s Shocking Discovery at Her Husband’s Funeral
Nancy’s life turned upside down at her husband Patrick’s funeral. She couldn’t believe he was gone. It had been a week since the car accident, but the pain still felt fresh. As she walked toward the cemetery’s exit, trying to process her loss, an older woman holding a baby suddenly blocked her path.
“Are you Nancy?” the woman asked, her voice trembling as the baby in her arms cried.
Nancy stopped, confused. “I am. Who are you?”
“I’m Amanda,” the woman said. Then, she dropped a bombshell. “This baby is Patrick’s child. Only you can look after this child now. Her mother can’t provide for her.”
Nancy felt like the ground had shifted beneath her feet. She stared at the baby, her heart pounding. “No, it can’t be! Patrick was a loving husband. He would never do this to me!”
She turned and hurried away, refusing to believe the woman’s claim. Patrick was loyal—he would never betray her.
But as Nancy reached her car, she froze. The same baby was lying in her back seat, crying. Amanda was nowhere in sight.
“How did this baby even get here?” she whispered. It was cold, so she wrapped her coat around the baby. Then, she noticed something that made her stomach churn—a birthmark on the baby’s neck, identical to Patrick’s.
Shaken, Nancy decided she needed answers. She drove to a hospital, using strands of Patrick’s hair from his hairbrush for a paternity test.
“Hello, I’d like to get a paternity test done,” she told the receptionist.
The woman explained it would take a few days, but Nancy insisted on expedited results, even offering to pay extra. While she waited, the baby cried again. Nancy bought formula and diapers, feeding the child as her thoughts raced.
When the nurse finally handed her the envelope, Nancy’s hands trembled as she opened it. The words “Paternity rate: 99%” stared back at her. Patrick was the baby’s father.
Nancy’s heart shattered. Patrick, her loving husband, had kept this devastating secret. But instead of wallowing, Nancy resolved to find the baby’s mother.
She searched Patrick’s belongings and even checked the GPS in his car, which led her to a modest house. Knocking on the door yielded no answer, so she tried a neighbor—and was shocked when Amanda opened the door.
“You?” Nancy gasped.
Amanda hesitated. “The woman who lived next door…died a few days ago. She had a heart attack when she learned about your husband’s accident. Emma is no more.”
Nancy’s breath caught. “Wait…did you say Emma? Was her last name Warren?”
When Amanda nodded, Nancy’s past came rushing back.
Twenty years ago, Patrick had confessed he loved Emma. Devastated, Nancy lied to him, claiming she was pregnant to keep him by her side. Her deceit had driven Emma away.
“I used him. I lied to him. I wasn’t pregnant,” Nancy admitted to Amanda. “Now I know Patrick found her again. And this baby is the proof.”
Amanda asked, “What are you going to do with the baby?”
Nancy replied, “I will raise her as my own child. Maybe that’ll help me seek forgiveness from Patrick and Emma.”
Nancy followed through on her promise. She raised baby Catherine with love. Years later, when Catherine turned 16, Nancy told her the truth, bracing for anger.
But Catherine smiled and said, “Nothing changes how I feel about you, Mom. You raised me. You’re my mom in every way that counts.”
Nancy cried and hugged her daughter. For the first time, she felt at peace, believing Patrick and Emma had forgiven her too.
